February 6, 2017

Heeling Hounds has always embraced the philosophy of training without fear or pain (and has never had to use a choke chain, prong collar, or shock collar in working with over 800 clients). We are now a proud member of the Pet Professional Guild. Learn more about PPG here.

Here are links to the three segments if you missed seeing them live: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Heeling Hounds was contacted by CATCH Canine Trainers Academy, a comprehensive on-line certification program based in New Jersey, and invited to become a mentor for their Professional Dog Trainer Course. Heeling Hounds is honored and thrilled to be able to work with an Academy that teaches its students that reward-based dog training is the best method for effective learning, long-term results, and great relationships with dogs. Since CATCH does not support the use of training techniques or tools that cause pain or harm to a dog, physically or mentally (e.g., shocking, choking, pinching), our collaboration will be a perfect match with Heeling Hounds' doctrine and training philosophy.

May 9th, 2016

Heeling Hounds has earned the Certified Professional Dog Trainer Knowledge-Assessed designation through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). The CCPDT is the only dog training certification organization accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. It tests a candidate’s comprehension of the science and art of learning, canine development, behavior, ethology, and husbandry and health, to include the following areas in depth:

- Professional practices and ethics as prescribed by the CCPDT, including the Humane Hierarchy and how that applies to real-world dog training, and an explanation of the ethical statement that CPDT-KA applicants are required to sign;

- Learning theory and application: classical and operant conditioning, cues, stimulus control, shaping, management, Premack’s and Thorndike’s principles, and how these are applied to training plans;

- Thorough understanding of training equipment: proper uses, advantages and disadvantages, including a discussion of tools which are considered aversive;

- Instructional skills: inter- and intrapersonal communication, learning styles, classroom preparation and management and techniques for dealing with difficult clients;

- Canine body language, normal and abnormal canine behavior for intact and neutered female and male dogs, aggression, signals of stress, cut-off signals, fear behaviors, appetitive and elimination behavior and more;

- Current theories on the history of canine domestication, facts about canine development through all life stages including puppies, adolescent, adult and senior dogs, a tour through classifications of dogs and their breed tendencies;

- Canine health and husbandry: basic nutrition, grooming, parasites, current vaccination guidelines and infectious diseases, symptoms which may limit a dog’s participation in training and emergency first aid." target=blank>Click here.

August 4, 2015

After careful consideration, Heeling Hounds has made the decision to terminate its membership with the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP). IACP considers itself “the unified voice of Balance and Reason,” meaning that its members are authorized and encouraged to use the outdated, painful, counter-productive methods that Heeling Hounds has never used and never will use. In working with over 600 clients, I have always used a scientific combination of classical Pavlovian and operant Skinnerian conditioning, and I have never required, used, or suggested that a client use a choke chain, shock collar, or spiked prong/“training” collar. It has in fact been my privilege and pleasure to get numerous dogs out of these tortuous devices and into either more humane equipment, or properly leashed trained based on my clients’ needs and preferences. While IACP tells members it “supports YOUR freedom to use the tools and methods you deem best for success in your canine profession,” since these methods include and advocate use of the tools mentioned above, Heeling Hounds has chosen to end its association with this group.
